5-HTP - The nutrient 5-HTP (the common name for the compound
5-hydroxytryptophan) is a derivative of the amino
acid tryptophan. A mood-enhancing chemical, 5-HTP
has attracted a good deal of attention lately because
of its ability to increase pain tolerance, induce
sleep, and affect how hunger is perceived. Unlike
many other supplements (and drugs) that have molecules
too large to pass from the bloodstream into the
brain, molecules of 5-HTP are small enough to do
so. Once in the brain, they're converted into an
important nervous system chemical, or neurotransmitter,
called serotonin.
Several elements of a good night's sleep appear
to be influenced by 5-HTP. In addition to reducing
the amount of time it takes to nod off, this compound
actually may enhance the quality of sleep itself,
increasing both the duration of dream states (REM
sleep) and of deep slumber. In studies, most people
who tried 5-HTP also reported feeling more rested
upon awakening
GABA - Popularly referred to as the body's natural tranquilizer,
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is an amino acid
produced in the brain. It acts as a neurotransmitter--a
chemical that fosters communication between nerve
cells--and helps to keep stress-related nerve impulses
at bay.
GABA participates in promoting relaxation, which
explains why many well-known anxiety medications--Valium
among them--target GABA receptors in the brain.
But unlike many prescription tranquilizers, GABA
is not habit-forming. GABA itself does not cause
drowsiness. Instead, by easing anxiety, it simply
makes it easier to fall asleep. Some research indicates
that the popular insomnia-fighting herb, valerian,
boosts GABA levels too. When specifically treating
sleep disorders, some people like to rotate GABA
with valerian or melatonin, the popular hormone-based
sleep supplement.
Lemon
balm - is used for treatment of a variety
of disorders, including cold sores, indigestion,
insomnia, and anxiety. Lemon balm is recommended for the
treatment of insomnia, particularly in combination
with the herb valerian. Studies have shown that
the fragrance of lemon balm has a sedating effect,
which supports its traditional use for treatment
of nervous disorders.
-
L-Taurine - Semi-essential amino acid L-Taurine
may help your leg muscles relax so you can sleep
better at night.
Calcium - Builds and maintains bones and teeth; helps regulate
heart rhythm; promotes restful sleep; helps maintain
proper nerve and muscle function; and helps maintain
normal blood pressure.
-
Skullcap -
Clinical studies have demonstrated
skullcap's ability to improve blood flow in the
brain, inhibit muscle spasms, and act as a mild
sedative.
-
Chinese
Licorice -
It exerts numerous beneficial effects on the body,
making licorice a valuable herb for treating a host
of ailments. It
seems to prevent the breakdown of adrenal hormones
such as cortisol (the body's primary stress-fighting
adrenal hormone), making these hormones more available
to the body. This could make for a better night
of sleep.
-
Chamomile - Used as a soothing calming tea for centuries;
contains apigenin which is responsible for the calming,
anti-anxiety effects.
Jujube - It relieves nervous tension and apprehension.
Good for insomnia.
Magnesium - Regulates the heart by maintaining normal heart
rhythm; converts blood sugar into energy; and promotes
sleep.
Melatonin -
Melatonin deficiency may cause sleep disorders,
immune deficiency conditions, and depression. Melatonin
has been found to alleviate sleep disorders and
boost the immune system.
Passion
Flower - This herb eases anxiety-induced
insomnia. It's very calming and eases muscle spasms
that can be very painful and keep you awake. Passion
Flower causes sleepiness, so it would be advisable
to avoid driving for a few hours after use.
Valerian - Used for thousands of years as a folk remedy,
tranquilizer, and sedative for disorders such as
restlessness, anxiety, and insomnia; scientifically
proven to be a safe and effective anti-anxiety agent
and sedative; best characterized as a mild tranquilizer.
